Below is a recent letter that Peter submitted to the Editors of our local newspapers. We are glad that he is beginning to voice his opinion on subjects that he feels strongly about.
Dear Editor,
Why is the Second Amendment in the Constitution? Is it so there will be a higher crime rate? Or so there will be a lower population? Maybe this is totally off the wall, but it might be because guns are needed to keep the crime rate down. “When you ask, is gun control good for the USA, you’ll find a media and government bias that hides the truth behind how guns help prevent terror and crime.” (FDRS website)
What does the Second Amendment say? Here it is, “A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.” The Second Amendment IS part of the Constitution - like it or not.
The writers of the Constitution put the Second Amendment in the Constitution for a reason. Or was it an accident? According to author, Gary Kleck, Gun owners shoot more criminals every year than the police and they use their weapons to defend themselves around 2.5 million times per year. When a 78-year-old woman heard an intruder breaking into her house for the second time, she grabbed her handgun and fired two shots, scaring him away. Police caught up with the uninjured intruder and took him into custody. (East Valley Tribune, Scottsdale, AZ, 3/25/08) Nope, not an accident.
What does the Second Amendment mean? Over 70% of all Americans (gun owners or not) believe the Second Amendment guaranties the right to own and bear arms. (March 2008 Gallup poll) Arms include guns, knives, bows, and arrows. It includes weapons. Arms in this case are weapons. They weren’t talking about your arms that are attached to your body; you already own those and carry them around with you.
Sincerely,
Peter Discher

Good to see you writing to the editor, peter. Did it get printed?

I am kind of dissapointed in your rebellious anti-law perspective though. Everyone knows it is the government and the policemen's job to protect us. It only takes them what, 15 minutes to get to you in Alturas? I wish you would get these seditious "I have rights" thoughts out of your head, owning guns is a priviledge, NOT a right.
Just kidding :) in case you didn't see the sarcasm dripping off the comment. but seriously, I'm impressed by the letter.
RG
No RG, it did not get published. I don't think people like that topic.
Yes, I could see sarcasm SATURATING your comment. Thanks for your comment.
Peter
I was just informed that it was published while we were in Arkansas.
Pete,
I am very impressed with your editorial, and I'm so glad that the Ledger printed it. You did a good job explaining your position and backed it up both Constitutionally and with anecdotal evidence.
We're proud of you!
Love,
Aunt Katie
BTW: The arms on your body bit was a nice, humorous touch!
We know you didn't mean our arms, but did you mean the "bear's arms?" We're so confused:O
We'll stick with our guns and religion.
We enjoyed what you wrote.
