I am writing in response to Christians who believe that some sort of government or bureaucratic input on healthcare is a good idea. I am curious to know how they connected this solution with Biblical principles.
Some have suggested that another government program (further State intervention) is necessary. Where in Scripture is backing found for this proposal? I find nowhere that Christ asked for anything from the Roman government, or even from the Jewish governmental leaders. In the Old Testament, Israel was never supplied with aid or programs from the king, but instead from the Temple and its guardians.
I propose that we get our health system – as well as our social system – back to where it was when this country was founded and as God instructed the Jewish Nation. This system worked in such a way that if a family could not take care of one of their own, the Church and community would step in and provide assistance, NOT the State. (See Deuteronomy 14:29; Leviticus 25:25, 35, 39; James 5:14; Matthew 25:37-46;) Please note that churches began almost all hospitals. Organizations like the Red Cross and Salvation Army were began by Christian people and supported by the community. There were many organizations like this in the early days of our country.
Also note that free help or assistance, and social aid should not be administered without sincere attempts on the part of the recipient to solve the problem without aid beforehand. (See II Thessalonians 3:10; I Timothy 5:8)
