Age 18
The aroma of freshly baked bread wafting through the house cannot be surpassed! In almost every ‘farmy’ story I heard as a child, homemade bread was the essence of a cheery, happy, country life, and memories of days gone by.
Bread making has for centuries been basic in a woman’s daily routine. It is now a lost art in homes across America. As women have left the home and joined men in the workplace, mass production of loaves in large, commercial bakeries has replaced bread making in the home. In our home, as in many others around the nation, we girls love to bake bread for our family on a daily basis. The productive feeling of fulfilling my purpose of homemaker (even in my father’s house) is not to be compared.
I love how versatile bread making is. Once you get a basic bread recipe down, variations of the same dough will make rolls, cinnamon buns, breakfast breads, pizza, and more.
One of the chief reasons I enjoy bread making is because of the pleasure my father derives from our homemade bread. Seeing his daughters bake bread for his family brings back memories of his mother baking bread for their family.
Finally, as bread is one of the staples in our diets, the skill of making it is an important one for girls to learn. I love knowing that I am helping to provide healthier, less expensive, and all around better bread for my family!
